Pulling the hose around for gas

I'm not sure what led to the situation, but I once pulled into a gas station just in time to see a panicked woman on the far side of her car holding a gas hose below the nozzle and gas was spewing full force all over her car and the pumps. I got out of there quickly and didn't look back.

Yea... I held it in the whole time and did not click for auto fill... did not want that to happen..

Yeah, I’ve never seen Costco 30 cents cheaper. The .02 was compared to BJ’s which usually has a short line. Costco right now is the same as BJ’s, .15 MORE than Sam’s, and .20 less than typical stations. WAWA and Royal Farms (convenience chains) have decided not to compete on gas pricing anymore. Maybe if you use premium the price difference is higher. I will say that people around here are nuts about lining up to save a penny or two per gallon…..and then they waste it anyway with excessive idling, using the drive thru, etc.

Next time you're on Alakwa St., check out MY Costco. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised at the savings - Island wide.

Got gas yesterday. I was watching. One car did the "drag the hose across" thing. Oddly enough, there was a pump open for "his" side. Maybe he forgot which car he was driving. Everyone else (except one guy on a motorcycle) waited for a pump on "their" side to be available. Of course this was an off-peak time, so the wait wasn't too bad. No more than a few cars deep at any time while I was there.

I never hesitate. In Mexico and the Vancouver suburb of Richmond, there are attendants and they do a good job of handling the other side. I recommend against it for DW as it could aggravate her arthritis in her upper arms. Too often she insists on filling up while returning from shopping!

I try to never let (make?) DW fill up. If she even mentions gas - I'll fill up. But, once in a while, she'll take a notion and fill up on her own. I'm glad she's still able to do it, but her arthritis can be almost debilitating at times.

Just south of you in Southern MD. Wawa was 3 cents cheaper than BJ's today. Just got rid of the diesel BMW X5. Diesel only at the end pumps. Usually, other pumps wide open and there is some knucklehead pumping regular gas at the end pump where I would need to be for my X5. Then they would finish pumping and walk into the store. If they saw me glaring, they would point to the other wide-open pumps thinking I could use them. Such is life. No more diesel for me.

Even the most liberated women will gladly turn over the job of handling gasoline pumps to a man if he is available.
Just my observation.

I pulled the hose around today. Usually I don’t but the lines at the ‘correct’ side were long. Thought of this thread!

I saw somewhere that most EV's have the charging port on the driver's side. But some proponents want to put curbside chargers in urban areas. Oops. I guess they never thought of that when they decided where to locate the port.

I’m not going to wait in line for gas to save $1.00.

I don't suppose I would either. BUT I have waited at Costco (for about 10 minutes) to save $1.00 per gallon ($14 +/- per tank.) I figure $14/10 minutes is about $84/hour. And, that's tax free.

Full disclosure: Costco gas only saves $1/gallon at times when gas prices everywhere else are shooting up rapidly. That $1/gallon savings quickly begins dropping until its in the $0.30 to $0.40/gallon range everyday. Still, at $0.30 per gallon, and 10 minute wait, that comes out to (a tax free) $25/hour. I don't want or need a j*b, but if I did, $25/hour for pick up w*rk that only had me sitting in a car, listening to tunes would be my idea of near perfect w*rk. BUT, YMMV.

There's a few stations I've run into where I actually have the opposite problem. Remember the old days, when many cars had the fuel filler in back, behind the license plate or whatnot?

Well, when you have a side fill, you usually don't have to worry about how precise you are with lining up the car to the fuel pump. But, on some of my antiques, I've noticed I have to line up the car at almost the perfect spot, or the pump won't reach. It's especially bad with my '67 Catalina, where the license plate/fuel filler is low in the bumper. On cars where the license plate is higher, above the bumper and between the taillights, it's not AS bad.

But, that does make me wonder, if many of these modern pumps actually have shorter hoses than back in the day? At least, I've been driving cars like that since they were still in production and/or common used cars, and I don't remember having problems with the hose reaching?

Of course, places like BJ's, Costco, etc are different, and set up for reach-arounds, but I mean your typical, smaller, everyday gas station.

No, you're right. The hoses have gotten shorter. Even at the ones which claim to reach the other side, it's a stretch. You have to be perfectly lined up and not have too big a vehicle or be parked too far from the pump.

When I was a kid pumping gas, we'd drag those hoses anywhere we wanted. Not sure if it's because it's self-serve now and they don't trust the masses with longer hoses, or just a money-saving thing.

I always pull to the side where the fuel port is located. Never reach the hose over the car. Just a habit.

Nearly as I can tell, OUR Costco sort of "assumes" a lot of drivers will pick the "right-side" fill lane because there are fewer cars that have it - leaving folks with left-side fill waiting - or switching. So Costco seems to have long enough hoses that I've never seen anyone who couldn't fill on the "wrong" side. YMMV

Never crossed my mind it would reach that far.

Me neither. I thought they couldn’t reach. Doesn’t seem like they can.

But we go to BJ’s and local gas stations. No Costco here.

Wouldnt a car that pulls up to the tank that you’ve pulled the hose from be passed off?

I just pull to the right and there is always a pump there without a line. The parking lot here has an angle and no one wants to squeeze into the smaller space.

No. The pumps are double stacked on the island so each side has it own pump. It’s not a two sided pump. That would create problems.

Gas hose at every Costco I've ever been to has been plenty long enough to reach across my car (and DW's minivan) to fill up. I'm a bit OCD about my car detailing and I've NEVER in 15+ years at Costco ever had a hose cause even a minor swirl mark on my paint.
FWIW- I am constantly amazed at folks who sit idling their cars/trucks in long Costco gas lines to fill up. While shopping I've seen folks wait 20+ min in line! Ain't worth my time...or $ in gas burned up idling the car waiting (not to mention extra wear on the engine). Gas in my area generally sells within 0-15 cents/gal of Costco price so it ain't a huge difference (especially for my 32-40mpg compact car). If I'm more than 2 cars deep I stop on another visit (frequent for me & DW), or fill up at another station with an open pump.

Went to Sam’s today for gas. Just for giggles I pulled on the side opposite of the filler tube. I pulled that hose all the way over to the other side - it was on a retractable cord. I filled my tank while I watched other lanes 3-4 deep sit in line while the other tanks were open.

The price differential between Costco and other places plus my card rebate, and the beautiful trip it takes to get there, and then visiting my parents at the cemetery at the same time, well, I choose to go to Costco for gas. The price difference is anywhere from $.25-$.50 a gallon. The lines here where I moved I can gauge it where there’s never a line.

Where I used to live, the close Costco was the busiest Costco gas station in Northern California. According to the guy I asked who said they deliver gasoline about 7 to 9 times a day. There was never ever not a line. And the wait was always about 15 to 20 minutes. I still did it, because that 15 minutes in the car was kind a like a vacation sometimes. Just disconnect the mind and relax. And

But I have to admit, the reason I drive a Kia Niro is because I was tired of going to the gas station all the time. I frequently get in the neighborhood of 57 miles to a gallon of gas in that baby. And driving is one of my ways to relax. I kind of check out and my mind stays on the road in my surroundings and the rest of it just goes away.

I don't like babysitting the hose while filling. I like to get back in the car, especially if it's cold.
I don't like touching the hose: it's filthy. Not that the handle isn't, but why compound the felony?
