What did you do today? - 2023/2024 version

Got my first shingles shot. Not planning much this weekend, in case of side-effects.

Spent a little time with a guy who is going to haul me in some dirt then some topsoil to level out and then reseed my yard. I live at the foot of a mountain,( not like out west)LOL- -but never the less its called a mountain here. House built in 2002 we bought it in 2012. Over time the south side of the yard has eroded slowly and the rocks have grown to where they are causing some problems mowing. I've had another company to come in and give an estimate which was a knock me down price gouge that I passed on. He is going to be able to start in about 3 weeks so by the end of April hopefully I'll have everything done and new grass starting to come in.

Yesterday took a long drive was out looking at wildlife and just enjoying the day.

Today up at 5 and started a loaf of sourdough bread to bake tomorrow morning. Will work on a new reel and tie some hook/anchor rigs up for paddle fishing season coming up. The kids are coming at some time and to spend the night. The 13 month GD will be getting tubes in ears on Monday morning. She will be getting it done here in our small community hospital. She just started walking yesterday we got to see her on a face time. Lol

After a morning of work out in the orchard, Picked up new gravel race bicycle from the shop. Got out on the new steed for a quick ride. She’s a fast one for sure! With the right motor sitting on the saddle could even be a podium bike!!!

Knocked the crud off my mountain bike from last weekend and got her ready for tomorrow’s race.

Went for an early morning hike then drove out to attend our DGD's Opening Day tee-ball game. 3 and 5 year olds, by far the absolute best Opening Day game I have ever attended!!!

Early morning bike race today. Just didn’t have the horsepower to keep up with the two guys in front of me. Third place.

Some days are just this way.

I bought an Enya Concert Ukelele and have been teaching myself to play the past week. I have never played a string instrument but can play the saxophone. I'm impressed how quickly I am catching on.

Cleaned my pellet smoker after smoking a 12 lb. prime brisket yesterday. :)

Wow. Lots of meat. when's the party?

More prime painting on our back shack renovated exterior. Somehow I thought I could do this in an afternoon. So far 3 half days are spent and I hope I am half way done by now. Way to estimate.

The leftover brisket went home with my daughter and husband. :D

I started on some upscale de-cluttering. DH and I bought sterling flatware years ago; our ex-spouses had brought sterling into the marriage and took it out with them, so we chose our own pattern. I don't use it at all. DS and DDIL are not sterling flatware people; many of the next generation aren't. I'm selling it through Replacements, Ltd. for about $1,300- almost 5 lbs. of silver and this is likely better than the amount I'd get form We Buy Gold places (usually half the meltdown value) and easier than selling it by the piece on eBay.

While I was at it I checked out the value of 7 silver teaspoons that were sold by the Russian government after the fall of communism; they came from the Kremlin. Those were going for $20-$30 each. Definitely worth listing so that's done. It will all go into the grandchildren's 529s and will save DS and DDIL from figuring out to do with them when I'm gone.

Had kids spend the night last night so they were here for an early ear tube surgery for 13-month-old GD. All went well she is in my arms as I type, sleeping. The wild outdoors is calling my name, so I hope once they leave later, I get to the country.

I thank God for a great surgery and for the day.

One of my rentals is now vacant so spent the day on yard clean up. We have a mow-blow-go front yard mtce but nothing in the back. What a mess back there! Everything is overgrown and a mess. And the house has a large back deck that needs a coat of stain. Will get that done on Sunday.

Cutting back everything and dragging the debris out front to the driveway.

Also need to remove two big trees, one of which is leaning over the house. That’s beyond what I want to do so will contract that out.

We haven’t done much to the house in a couple years so spending a few $ks on repairs and mtce is not too bad.

Went to ranch early and just got home. Chinook winds today so didn't do any hiking at the ranch but did get a spot mowed where I'm going to do a seed trial of Sainfoin hay. If it does well I will plant a larger area of it in the future.

I also finished nailing down the rest of the tin ovah hang I installed over the old work shed.

I also went and checked on the Golden Eagles that I have been following the last 7 years. I hadn't seen them around till today so I'm hoping they will nest in that old nest they have been.

A lot of Bald Eagles at the ranch today. I didn't take the time to watch them carefully but I'm sure they were in their mating ritual fly patterns.

Also checked on new truck to be built week of March 18th and it said in Production!! I'm excited but I really don't want to pay for it. Lol

After a breakfast social with friends, decided to start my outdoor shed spring cleaning efforts, before the early evening rain.

Took a break early afternoon, and noticed in USPS Informed Delivery that I was receiving a letter from the IRS. This started my mind racing - I know I submitted all forms correctly for the last few years, I have documentation for all my deductions...

Then I noticed it was dressed to just me and not the both of us - it likely was not about or tax return. Sure enough, when it arrived, it was just "we are notifying you that on such-and-such a date someone signed into your online account using ID.ME.." Yes, I did do that. Blood pressure no longer elevated. :)

Does signing into ID.ME always generate a letter? I signed in at a car dealer on their computer to get a veterans discount approved two months ago and I didn't get a letter?

DH and I both had medical appointments this morning, then did some errands, and ended up having lunch a a local mom and pop burger joint. Had a cheeseburger, sweet potato fries and small chocolate milk shake(after taking a lactaid tablet)
Tasted good, as I have not had a meal like that in a long time. But now, feeling bloated and kind of nauseous. Reminder why I don't eat much fast food.
Why does your mind tell you "that sounds good", and then your body goes "Nope"! lol

This was the first time I sued ID.ME to sign into the IRS, so perhaps that is why. Or, I might have a notification setting somewhere in my profile.

Got my first shingles shot. Not planning much this weekend, in case of side-effects.

DD and family were up last weekend and DD came down with shingles which was confirmed by her doctor after she got home. She is 34. Her Mom had shingles in her 20s. I have been vaccinated so not expecting any problems.

Today I plowed some very deep snow. All I did was plow out the roads and drives for the people that live up here and one family that wants to come up on Sunday. There were 3 and 4 foot drifts and over a foot on the rest of the ground. My truck was struggling. I think snow got packed in by the engine and caused problems. It will be in the 50s next week. :)

Replaced brother’s mail box yesterday. Snow plow took out the mailbox a couple weeks ago, post and all!

Brother wanted to reconstruct new one with masonry block and make it “indestructible”. We settled on a simple box sitting on a 4x4 post so that if an errant driver … Or snow plow … hits it it’ll simply knock the box over with only minor damage to car and driver. You don’t want to construct a big immovable object right up next to the road! (I’m a traffic engineer and spent part of my career doing collision investigations and have investigated the results of vehicle/roadside object collisions many times).

At our last house, the snowplow took out our mailbox at least once a year. Not a big deal to replace it, and I figured that putting something substantial there would cause even more trouble.

Been hiking in back country every day for the last 5 days. I will be heading out shortly for anothah day in paradise. The weather is going to change by next weekend so getting in as much as I can now.
