What did you do today? - 2023/2024 version

I went up today and the young fellow tracked over from his stockpile, and touched the blade of the 850 to the lath I put by the silt fence. I marked under the blade and VIOLA! I have a benchmark.
Look what being nice and a couple of dozen donuts will get you :)

So, it looks like you are on your way to start that build. Exciting times.

Worked my part-time retiree job yesterday at the construction materials lab. The young guy who goes out to job sites to grab construction material samples (the “sample runner”) for testing quit, so I drew the short straw and filled in. And right as I was wrapping up for the day one of my other guys asked for help. No way I’m going to pack up and leave one of my technicians struggling.

A very long day and a reminder of why I only work a couple days a week!

I do a gig worth about 2500$ a year and is an hour for dollar in exchange. Doesn't even amount to that many hours in a years' time. All I can think of when I am there are, I could be doing this or that and leave as soon as my obligations is filled.

I know what you are saying load and clear.

Started reassembling my 1957 VW Beetle's original engine. I had a machine shop in CA build up the short block. To be honest, the engine case is probably the only thing original, but that is the part with the serial number!

The last two days my brother and I went up to Vancouver BC. We looked at the insulation for the thermal storage mass, and visited our brother in North Vancouver and ran around checking out the sights. Our brother graduated from UBC in 1975 and we spent time there today. It is a beautiful city and campus.

About 25 minutes ago, I heard a thump, felt a bump and things about the house rattled. I ran out to see if one of my trees had fallen or a truck had crashed nearby, where I saw all my neighbors similarly coming outside. I came back in and checked the USGS site, which reported a magnitude 4.7 earthquake in northern New Jersey. In all the years we've lived here, that's the first earthquake we've experienced.

I have experienced two. They are unnerving to say the least. Hope all is well.

Took grandson to school yesterday and today, Dad had to be at work extra early.
So glad we are retired and able to do these kind of things to help!

I called and confirmed that the pension plan managers recieved my application in time. I sorted out my understandings and now we wait 30~60 days to get it done.
The pension checks will be retroactive to the 1st of April.
My civil engineer sent me the stormwater plan for the property development, it is 60 pages of charts and maps and diagrams and boilerplate.
My eyes glazed over as I read it, I knew he had done a great job.
That is the expected response of the city planners and inspectors. He papered this thing over completely!!
I paid about $30 per page, and it is well worth it, if it works. He will go to bat on any and all of it.

Nice!

I have fond memories of rebuilding a dozen or so VW air cooled engines in past years. The latest one in 2020 when I restored a 1971 Beetle.

Got up at 4:45 AM today and walked the dog, then proceeded to drive to Pier 28 in Galveston to pick up my daughter and her husband from their cruise week.

The 6:00 AM traffic going south into Houston on I-45 is a sight to see....jammed and everyone is driving 80 MPH.

Slacker. The doggo woke me up at 3:30 a.m.

I went to visit a few friends at my last office (who had asked me to come visit). I stopped off at Dunkin to bring in some coffee. They mentioned that they had felt the earth quake in the building (Long Island) and one commented that she thought it was the train. When I drove home, I was stuck in traffic (which did not stress me out in the least as it reminded me of what I will not be facing on a regular basis).

Afterwards, I went home and got dinner ready for the doggo, dear son, and myself, and then went to visit our accountant.

That is something I just can't imagine driving in. Today I drove to the ranch the 23 miles this morning I didn't see one vehicle. None!! Lol The way home took another way and had a few cars on that road.

You Texans wouldn't want me to be driving there I can tell you that.

The wind is blowing like 40 mph in Tucson today. It gave me a great excuse to not go outside and tend to my roses. Instead, I took an afternoon nap.

A thatched and mowed the yard this morning. After lunch headed to ranch to get old hand jack pump reattached to pipe for shallow well.

Was a windy day so being a good day to do those things instead of the better days coming. It all ways seem I have so much to do and so little time. The only good thing about it I don't have to do anything and work as hard as I want too.

Friday is errand day
1.Stopped at closing 99 cent store
2.Grocery shopping
3.Filled 2 gallon jugs with water
4.Filled gas tank 6+ gallons
5.Picked up lunch at restaurant

Ordered vinyl skirting and hardware for our manufactured home (not mobile!) to the tune of 1500 beans. Should be a good improvement. After installation.

We have been looking to replace our mis matched luggage, they are looking pretty ragged.
After looking online, I realized I really needed to see the sizes in person, plus wanted to check sales in stores around here. Had some errands to do, so also looked at luggage sets. Went to TJ Max, Kohls, Target, Costco and looked at Amazon just to compare.
Finally found something I liked, on sale at Macys, in the mall of all places. $440 set of 3 for $119. They were stuck way in the corner, under a tiny "Sale" sign. Pretty good deal.

Today, we have youngest grandson coming over. He wants to make Pizza with Papa,

Since the only appointment I could get at the Costco hearing aid shop was today I had to make my first ever weekend Costco visit today (Saturday).

Since my normal Costco visits are at 10 am on a weekday, right when they open, it was an incredible experience for me. Made me once again feel so sorry for the poor folks who have no choice but to go there on the weekend.

Slacker, ha! That was the morning after I built 60+ feet of wooden fence and drove 600 deck screws! ( I took the picture and in it is the helper, my insurance man and Inspector Chicken)

Installed that $15 new lawn mower carburetor from Amazon. I decided that while I could probably fix the old one by simply drilling out the jet, it's a pain to get to it so I took the path of least resistance. The mower started right up and runs fine. I left a glowing 5-star review on Amazon for it.

SWEET! I have an oval window 1955 VW Beetle. Converted it to 12 volt and has a 1835cc powerplant with dual carbs. Don’t take it out much though.

Troubleshot a neighbor's whole house vacuum cleaner failure to motor brushes.

Did free fix-it work for the HOA where a rental house is located.

Brought boat to house to clean and charge batteries.

We had the monthly get together with wife's cousins for breakfast, and then drove up to the property to get a finish floor elevation and stake some lot corners for the possible side sewer. Her sister in law and husband met us up there for a bit. They live 1/2 mile away.
