Contrast between real life and current economic news

We need to remove all government incentives not to work in society.

FIRE should be for those who earned and saved, live an extremely frugal life, or some combination.

We have made this problem. Now we live in a less productive society. We are lucky we have the world's reserve currency so we can leech off other countries, but that won't last forever and we may have to earn our keep.

My college debt for 4 years as about $4K, DW's was about $12K, so when we married in 1983 with a combined salary of $50K that was very easy to manage.

Ah, the pampered rich . Our combined income for 1983 was $23k and that was higher than 81 and 82, but we bought a house in 1984!
We started saving in 1981 when we got married.
