Sulfur dioxide is a very corrosive gas that instantaneously reacts with water to form sulfurous acid (a relative of the better known corrosive agent sulfuric acid). This would be a problem to have in your colon. Remember, the stomach is designed to handle acid, but the colon is designed for neutral to slightly basic pH.
