...actually, I feel fine but the spouse is suffering some.

When my husband told me 6 months ago how we would be spending our Memorial Day weekend I thought he was crazy. Well, I still think he's crazy: 5 days of travelling, 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 miles of biking, and 26 miles of running and all he got was this lousy medal to show for it :)

Tell him congrats! Did an olympic distance tri a couple years ago, decided that was my maximum length! Friends did a half Ironman, even that scares the crap out of me!

That medal is a breeze compared to what you have to go through to earn this medal...

Well, that's one I hope we never see... the spouse missed getting a face full of shrapnel by about two feet last time he was in Iraq.  The only thing that saved him is that they had already been hit once that day and had evacuated a bunch of the vehicle crew so he was not in his usual seat.  He is heading back there in a few months and hope we are as lucky this time.

Anyway, the spouse is already targeting Ironman Western Australia when he comes back from deployment (he heard that its a flat, wind protected course, with a fun atmosphere) .  I sure hope our travel fund doesn't turn into a "race fund" from here on out :)

Lawrence - DH says that he's leaning more towards shorter races from here on out.  Says Ironman training is pretty boring with no variation - just lots of suffering.  Also at 5 ft. 10 in and 200 lbs with a weight lifters build he has no illusions of ever qualifying for Kona, and not much interest in it either.

I'm 6' 2 and been as light as 180 and still look like a porker compared to the hard core triathletes, not interested in being that skinny!

Likewise,
I'm 5'10 1/2" w/o shoes 6'0" with shoes and I weighed 162 this morning. To be a tri-athlete, I suspect I'd need to be about 130 lb. So I feel guilty because I weigh so much. Must be my penis.

A lady passed me on the Embarcadero this morning doing serious training. She appeared to be 5'7" and 70 lb. Her arms had absolutely nothing but bone and skin. but she could run like the wind. Uhhh, notice the Ethiopian olympic women with facial bones nearly protuding thru their skin.

I say, let's all try to get under body mass of 12.5 and see how life really feels.

With them spindly little legs?

Crap, I got down to 190 a couple of years ago and looked like a beanpole.

Back up to 205 and I don't like it one bit. I think 190 is just right, 34 inch waist, feel light, no heartburn...getting below that requires constant effort. :p But there is no excuse for my current weight. Too many beers and pizzas.

Ah yes, and lets not forget the money... Ironman is not exactly a frugal sport.  The entry fees usually run around $400 and I'm scared to total up the amount we spent on hotel, plane tickets, ferry ride, and other misc. expenses.  We had a good time and that's what money is for, but I'm amazed by the people who do more than one of these things a year.

I was also blown away by the bikes.  DH has a flashy Softride tri bike with some pretty high end components that turns heads at the local races, but damn - it looked like a department store Huffy compared to some of the stuff there.

You said it! My bike cost me $700, and I've probably passed $1,000 at this point, and I'm quite sure your husbands bike makes mine look like a huffy!

Since I'm scanning in photos for family... here's the obligatory "Lance Armstrong" shot:

Laurence, just so you don't feel too bad I am carrying the "Daddy 15" too. Like OAP said, must be my penis.

6', buck-sixty - after a really large meal... 8)

To paraphrase Shel Silverstein: the wife said when I could see my own d*ck, she'd be glad to look at it too... :p

Oh gosh HFWR I'm going to use that line tonight!!!! LMAO!!!

wow glad to hear i'm not the only one here porking out (misery loves company)

It seems like work is cutting into the gym time, and i'm getting more lazy by the day. I agree with Laurence that its just too much pizza and beer.

I look at pictures of myself from a couple of years ago and I'm just shocked :'(

Don't we all. BTW, I saw a minivan driving around in Milwaukee today that had a personalized plate that said SALUKIS.............:D

Congrats to your DH. I admire people who compete in these type of races, but I do not have that type of ambition or stamina.

I wish him well in his next tour of duty. I wish that all of our guys and gals would come home safely, the sooner the better.
