Class of 2021

Visiting the forum today for the first time in a few months, and it’s good to see so many newly graduated members of the Class of 2021 - congrats to all!

I'm actually moving to the class of 2022 now -- here is why I am pushing out.

1. I moved this year. I will settle in over the course of the year.
2. I don't have a pension, and I wanted to see how things shook out over the course of the pandemic/election.
3. I am going to cashflow the renovations on the new house -- my bonus in the new year will top everything off before I retire.
 
Still a newbie on this forum.

First full day of retirement at age 60. 18 years in tech, a break after a very tough 2001, then 18 years in retail. The last 6 years would best be described as a pretirement job (PT, refusing a chance for a promotion to FT).

Early 2020 we decided on and implemented a plan to have DW go from 36hrs/wk to 5hrs/wk while switching to ACA. Then COVID hit and her department shut down. I've been working at a resort, and they shut down too. So we had a chance to test-drive the time-use aspects of RE and liked it. We do a lot of RV camping, ended up being out for more than 100 nights in 2020.

Earlier this year DW said she didn't want to go back to even the 5hrs/wk and I said okay. This was earlier than planned by at least a few years, so it led me to finding this board and some other helpful resources. I looked at our numbers a few ways and decided we're GTG.

The dress code at the resort has been nice, but I pushed it a little yesterday by wearing a Hawaiian shirt that was my late father's. Things are quiet this time of year at the resort, so I didn't see my boss until about 2 hours before departure. He got a kick out of the shirt. Kept it on for our celebratory dinner out.

A good age to go. Not young enough that you may be tempted back after a while and not old enough that in a few years you might look back and wish you retired earlier.

I’m searching for a Campervan that we can use to tour Europe ( 3 months max in 6) and our own Scotland and bag a good few Munros..

Not sure if it counts as I have been retired since 2015, but our main household breadwinner, Mr ImaCheesehead, at age 64,gave notice 6 weeks ago and has his last working day on Monday August 2.

He doesn’t have any interest in finances so trusts that I have properly calculated that we will be ok. I have read this forum almost everyday for years and it has provided really great info and I think we WILL be ok. (If we don’t kill each other)

As planned, today is my last w^&k day. I turned over my company phone, laptop and badge yesterday, so practically speaking I finished w^&k yesterday, but I'm still being paid for today.

I continued to torture the retirement planning tools since my original announcement, and they all indicate a secure, well funded future for DW and I doing the things we love.

Looking forward to everyday being Saturday!

I also FIREd today

Today I handed over my laptop, car, etc. and FIREd as planned. Age 60. As planned.
I wanted to let you know that this community reaches far over the US - I am from the Czech Republic. I have planned this step for about 8 years, most of which I have also spent following this forum.
Relying on a decent nest egg based on dividend growing stocks (and a dividend income), a large home with paid mortgage, no debt and some cash, I was able to FIRE (DW and I). Kids are independent, we had helped them to their own small apartments for a starter.

Thank you for all the experience and knowledge I have been collecting from following you during the past 7 years. You helped me a lot with reaching this significant milestone in life.

Original plan was 2023 (age 55). But all calculators indicate I'm FI. With w*rk becoming intolerable with daily meetings, tasks, deadlines, annoying co-workers, I've been anxious & stressed out. So.... :) I am considering to give my resignation in 2021 (age 53). I've done some dry-run RE routine and I'm ready for it.

**Finally decided to call it quits on 03 December 2021 at age 61. In the process of selling our home, (got full asking price and some), moving to Texas by Jan 2022. Charting a whole new course. Our kids and Grandkids can come and visit if they lol.
We purchased a model home in Boerne, TX and so we have to wait until they sell all the lots. (contract states before March 2022). In the meantime we will be cruising around after Christmas and enjoying the country side until we actually take custody of the new home. Nice thing this that once we close on that home the end of Sept, they will rent it back from us for way above the mortgage. :dance:
-Financially we are fine with several streams of income well over our expenses. To note, this site has been a great source of inspiration and knowledge. See you on the other side:dance:

Current thinking is to exit 12/31/21 and announce just before 90 days out. (No concerns that the announcement will trigger any bad outcomes at work)

What holidays do get from employer at new year 3, 4 of January ? Do you have any vacation days remaining ? If so I would be tempted to retire officially 7 January, without actually working January, Another smaller pay check and maybe some other benefits.

If not, then still great news for your plan. The time will fly in.

What holidays do get from employer at new year 3, 4 of January ? Do you have any vacation days remaining ? If so I would be tempted to retire officially 7 January, without actually working January, Another smaller pay check and maybe some other benefits.

If not, then still great news for your plan. The time will fly in.

+1. If you can get paid for New Year's day, and get another month of health insurance, it might be worth it! Also, be sure you're not forfeiting any company 401(k) match by leaving on the 31st of December. In the final company of my carreer, you had to be employed on the last day of the year to get the match. Cheers!
 
I’ve decided to give my notice on Tuesday! Really anxious about it but I know it’s the right move. Reading everyone’s input here makes me feel better.

I’m senior management so it’ll probably be a one month long countdown to allow them time to find my replacement.

I’m not 100% sure I won’t work again at some point so for now I’m planning a 6 month mini retirement and see how it goes. I’m sure I’ll find plenty to do while I decompress.
