I just filed my paperwork to retire (from the Fed govt) on 31 Dec 2021 -- making into the class of 2021 by a hair.

My gov retirement is 1Dec 21 and only 12 years of service, although I am retired Navy calling it quits at age 61.

My final project is running a little late so I just bumped my date from 9/30 to 10/22. No biggie.

So this happened today. My countdown app switched from years/months/days/hours to this glorious statement.

Yesterday, there was a virtual luncheon and sharing of memories, gifts, some tears — all a bit too peopley for me, but it wasn’t necessarily about me. It was good that along with knowing my work would live on, I had also made a difference in other ways.

Today was the process of getting myself out of the building, out of the company. I drove home in the early Friday commuter traffic (that I will certainly not miss), and am now listening to a fun collection of “retirement music” compiled just for me, smiling, relaxing.

Woot woot... the day is finally here!! I've been counting down to it on this thread but thought I'd celebrate the occasion with a separate post

Transition finished, projects wrapped up, send-off lunch with a few of my closest coworkers (in person!) very much enjoyed. Honestly, the ramp-down was very smooth and went pretty much just as planned.

Now to think of "Life after FIRE". It will be hard to let go of the structure that work provided to life in general - M to F, meetings/video-calls, what-time-is-my-first-call-tomorrow?, evenings-are-my-only-free-time-during-the-week, mentality.

Proof of that - here I am, Saturday morning and sitting at my computer writing this Time to get off my butt and head to the gym.

Well the day finally came! I retired at 56 from my Fed job on Monday the 27th with a nice (low key) send-off. I already had my bags packed and took off from Texas for our home in the mountains of Western North Carolina. I have to say, I already feel more relaxed. No more meetings, writing performance reviews, or work travel and no more having to be somewhere on someone else's time.
The final year took a long time - perhaps due to the interminable nature of the pandemic - but it did finally get here. I have to say, "hang in there!" to those who are still looking at the countdown app on their phones like I did.

Laid off and retired on Oct 12th

So, I was planning an end of the year exit, and not sure who I should be thankful to, I was lucky enough to be on the list! Four of us were let go on Tuesday, all managers since the boss wants to insert his peeps. Got a six month severance and I'm golden! Taking a few days to wing down and say goodbyes to colleagues. Went to a seaside restaurant yesterday with wife, parking was easy and no lines at normally busy restaurant! I can get used to this for a while.

Financially speaking:

We have about 4.5M, our spending is 150Kish with 25% of which is discretionary spending. We plan to be flexible on that.

of the 4.5M, about 40% in the IRAs and 60% outside of IRAs (taxable and cash).
I have been spending from my investment account for the last six months (keeping income in a separate account) to see what's like when you actually withdrawing from the piggy bank.

I'll update more later, I'm sure things will be different as time goes.

From 1 November I will become officially retired and start receiving monthly pension income from retirement fund. I have already been on un-paid sabbattical since August, so you can keep 1 August as retirement date.

Just a few updates:

Since March I have been walking outside 30-90 minutes every day. I have not changed my diet much, but I have added a vegetable smoothie glass every day. Also I only eat the initial serving at meals, so I don’t take more food even if it tastes delicious. With this program I have managed to reduce my weight about 10 kilos in 7 months. I am still continuing the program with aim to still reduce further 3-5 kilos by March 2022.

I recently bought a treadmill that makes daily walking weather independent.

Since summer I have started to do some gardening activities. Recently I picked down apples from my summer cottage garden and pressed 15 liters apple juice aut of them. With that juice I am brewing apple wine currently. I still have some apples left so I could try to make apple cider also. I never brewed cider before, so I need to study the process for cider.

Yesterday was my final day after 30+ years. Quiet day. Not with a bang, but a whimper...

That’s sort of the way things are going these days.
I’m retiring in December with my last day working being 12/29. My county that I work for will likely be closed that week for the holiday. Only essential services. I’m going to need to find out who I turn my stuff into on that last day.
Luckily I actually prefer to just slip out without any fanfare.

Just 2 months to go until my 12/30/2021 retirement date.
I applied for SSA to begin in January but haven’t heard back yet.
I’ve also applied for my pension to begin with my retirement date. Took 5 minutes to apply on line although I anticipate having to submit my divorce papers when they get around to reviewing the application.
I count my time by how many Mondays are left. I have 7 because of holiday time off.
I know the time will fly by once the holidays get here. Great time to retire!
