Yesterday was my final day after 30+ years. Quiet day. Not with a bang, but a whimper...
That’s sort of the way things are going these days.
I’m retiring in December with my last day working being 12/29. My county that I work for will likely be closed that week for the holiday. Only essential services. I’m going to need to find out who I turn my stuff into on that last day.
Luckily I actually prefer to just slip out without any fanfare.
It is indeed!
Due to Covid, my company sent everyone home to work on 3/20/20. My last day of work-from-home (or anywhere else!) was 12/18/20. At the end of the day I simply turned off my laptop, and thus ended a 25-year career at that job. Talk about a whimper!
I arranged to turn in all my equipment on 1/4/21. Even then, the only person I saw was the facilities guy who took the box from me.
I will say the company offered a "virtual retirement party" via Zoom, but I declined. A handful of close friends did set up a "personal" virtual retirement party for me a few days before, and that was fun.
At the time, I thought folks would be back working in offices by now, but so far my ex-company is still 100% WFH. I live only 8 miles from the workplace, and always thought I would go back (post Covid) to say a proper "goodbye" to a few more people, but now I wonder if that will ever happen. The WFH option looks like it will be permanent.
