Baseball 2020

I've watched 3 games so far... I think I watched 1 game until the 5th inning. The other two maybe until the 3rd... Just not the same

So it wasn't my imagination that the direction, camera views, etc. were super spotty?

I'm guessing they have much smaller crews, which means less cameras for starters. They may also be doing some remote direction which could really limit things.

My sport is NHL, which starts in a few days. I hope it isn't as bad as MLB.

The good news is that the NHL is only using two cities for all the games and everyone is in quarantine so hopefully they will be able to concentrate resources and do good broadcasts. That said, I am not sure what the arrangement is for announcing crews. Hopefully they have the A teams. Sometimes it's difficult to listen to some of the local crews.

Today's games:
Orioles at Marlins -- postponed due to Covid
Yankees at Phillies -- postponed due to Covid

It will be interesting to see where we go from here.

I think season is in jeopardy. Better to take caution than have a major outbreak. Nothing wrong for MLB to say they tried, but just couldn't pull things off safely.

Also, from a scheduling perspective, with all the games crammed so close together teams really can't afford too many postponements.

I figured all along that the season will start. But finishing is another challenge all in itself.

News of a coronavirus outbreak among the Miami Marlins put players and staffers across Major League Baseball on high alert, with many expressing concern and a level of fear not typically associated with professional athletics.
The Washington Nationals are scheduled to visit Miami – one of the country’s biggest COVID-19 hot spots – next weekend, and manager Dave Martinez hopes that the league “does the right thing” and does not compel his team to travel there.
Martinez has plenty of cause for concern: He missed three games in September 2019 after undergoing a cardiac catheterization, and became emotional during a video call with reporters Monday.
"I'm going to be honest with you, I'm scared,” said Martinez, who says he washes his hands “99 times a day” and expressed worry for the many friends he has on the Marlins.

Maybe the Astros could help them out. I understand they had some excellent camera men the past few years and they may be looking for work. :)

I noticed a lack of shots of good-looking (live) fans in the stands during breaks in the action. I’m sure they are there at all ballparks but know there are plenty in the bleachers at Wrigley Field!

I actually noticed on one of the games that I watched, the cameraman was focusing for a longer time on a cut out of good-looking fan. Not quite the same though.

Ah yes, the Cub's production team. Yes, they had a thing, didn't they?

Rarely would you see the guy with the mustard and beer stained shirt too short to contain his stomach flowing over his belt.

Saw plenty of that live at the games. Well, at least in the 70's when I went every day. Since Wrigleyville got gentrified, and it became "a thing," the clientele changed a bit.

I know. What a terrible rule .

The only other silly rule that comes close is the relief pitcher must face 3 batters rule. Rule is designed so managers can't manage. So, what if the relief pitcher is ineffective, giving up a grand slam the first batter he faces. The then must pitch to 2 more hitters? Silly.

Oh well, at least a game that resembles baseball is back .

I don't mind the pitcher rule. It helps move the game along. Nothing worse than a manager changing pitchers 3 times in an inning to face one guy apiece.

Everybody beat the Astros is my baseball goal for this year.
Sorry it would seem you missed your goal already.... They are at .600 already with 3 wins and 2 losses...

Add 7 inning double headers to the funky rules of the 2020 season.

From a fan's perspective, I'm treating this season as a practice season with double asterisks. I'm still doubtful the season will finish.

Add one more thing to the list of firsts in this unusual 2020 baseball season.
MLB is preparing to implement a new rule that will have doubleheaders last seven innings -- similar to the way they're conducted in the minor leagues, an MLB official with direct knowledge of the decision confirmed to USA TODAY Sports.

The person chose not to be identified because an official announcement has not yet been made.
With the recent surge in positive COVID-19 tests, the postponement of several MLB games and the 66-day window to complete the regular season, several teams will need to schedule doubleheaders to make up lost games.

They must be trying to compete with NASCAR to see how much they can screw up the sport. NASCAR is becoming unwatchable (and that's saying a lot coming from a die hard racing fan)... Football has done a pretty good job screwing things up too!

So how are pitched complete games counted for a 7 inning game Vs. 9 innings. I know they are rare these days (complete games pitched), but it does happen. And on occasion, the pitcher throws a no hitter. I guess they could just asterisk the event (*)?

They are making baseball hard to watch like the NFL.

the record book writers are going to wear out the * key for this "season".

I think they’re doing the best they can in the midst of this terrible situation for everyone. We’d all like to sit back and suck down a summertime beer over sports just as normal but this is not normal.

I'm wondering if MLB will be able to finish the season? or maybe the last team with a full roster wins the championship?

It is starting to look bad for having an NFL season.

I, for one, will NOT allow these various rule changes to prevent me from sucking back a cold beer. ;) If some of the games will be 7 innings, I’ll just need to drink faster.

This season is about as far from “normal” as we could imagine. As you say, I think they’ve done a decent job of tweaking things to try to allow the season to play out. If the choice is no baseball, or bizarro baseball, I’ll gladly take bizarro baseball.

From what I’ve seen, the much-maligned runner-on-second-to-start-extra-innings has done what it was intended to. I found a reference that indicates that from 2012-2017, 43.7 percent of extra inning games ended in the 10th. Of the 7 extra-inning games so far, 5 have been decided in the 10th inning. Small sample size, to be sure, but encouraging so far. From what I’ve seen, we also haven’t been treated to the boring bunt-fest that was feared by many.

Manfred pretty much is treating MLB as though baseball and football are the same sport with all the ticky-tacky head scratching rules.

Am I the only one who liked a 7-inning double header at my local minor league park? It was good watching. But it was MINOR league ball, and that's OK.

MLB deserves all the crap you guys throw at them. They got greedy with their day-night double headers. Now that the revenue doesn't matter, they become wimpy. Someone may break a nail.

MLB is not MiLB, although they want it to be this year.
