What is your pet peeve of the day? -- 2021

Another pet peeve, painters who

1) don't remove wall plates on outlets and switches and

2) leave no trace of paint type or color. It would so easy to write this on the back of the wall plate you were too lazy to remove. Plus with the paint under the wall plate the old color, I can't even take a sample there to have it matched at a paint store.

I think I brought this up earlier in this thread, but I loathe the USB 3.0 Micro-B connection. I am struggling to get a 6 month old external USB drive (desktop version) to read today, and, once again, the connection is fighting me. Tried a different cable. No better.

The jack within the external drive case is already wonky. I had to angle the drive and pin the cable with some books just to keep it stable enough for the drive to connect and be able to be read.

Have I mentioned I loathe the USB 3.0 Micro-B connection?!

1. Fancy craft beer that costs more than $100 a case. Yes, there are lots of them. No, no one is forcing me to buy it, and you can bet I am not.

Oye...yes! When we moved into our current home, we had the entire house repainted before we moved in. There were a lot of faceplates and HVAC vents that were painted. The painter was not too thrilled when I told him that they needed to all be replaced.

I agree 100%. Not too long ago, I was very happy to see that there were SO MANY beers to choose from. It was like being in heaven. Then, reality set in. TOO MANY CHOICES and none of 'em are cheap and truth be told, 75% of them are terrible. I don't mind sampling the local brews, but I am not a fan of spending $7 or $8 on something I may not like.

In one of the houses I owned I had to replace at least half of the outlets because they were filled with paint, not to mention the trim plates. In my current house most of the door hinges are painted over. I met a painter in a craft beer bar a while back (see how I tied the posts together?) and I bitched about that, and he gave me a puzzled look and said, “but of course you paint over hinges.”

I bet he thinks that his sock's color should match his shoe color, too!

I love it when they fill in the grooves of the screws with so much dried paint you can't get enough grip to turn them. What fun.

FWIW, I now take a quick photo of the paint label, and if it's a custom mix the label that shows what colors were used and the amount. Ideally do that before the label is covered with dried paint.

Barking Dogs!

Our new neighbor has a dog that barks all freaking day. If we have our windows open at night it wakes me up in the morning. If I go out in the yard, the stupid thing barks every time I make a sound. We used to have deer in our yard frequently but they hardly come around anymore since the barking dog moved in. We even have to turn up the TV when watching a movie to drown out the barking dog.

A barking dog would have to drive the owners crazy too, so I'm guessing it's their idea of security when they are gone. Every time I hear the dog barking I think "Oh, I guess the neighbors aren't home".

We built a fence to block their house from our view, but there's not much we can do to block the noise. So much for peace and quiet living in the country.

Several of our neighbors also have dogs but we rarely hear them. Sure there's an occasional bark, but not all day long like the new neighbors.

I am not a big fan of calling code enforcement and/or animal control but if I had this issue and letting the neighbor know that it's an issue (and fails to resolve it)...I would have zero issue of using that remedy. That is if it's available to you.

That's more than a pet peeve, that's a big deal. Consider calling the police or animal services in. We had that problem occasionally and to a much lesser degree in our previous home (dogs were 2 houses down), and it still sometimes got me pretty worked up. I wouldn't stand for what you describe.

I'd hesitate to approach the people, anyone that inconsiderate is not someone I want to try to reason with.

Good luck.

Ugh. We had that in our last house. Neighbor didn't mind his dog barking from 1AM to 6AM daily because it wasn't keeping him up.....

I've thought about contacting them (I do have their email address), but don't like conflict and wouldn't know what to say. I'm sure they're nice people (never met them) but the dog is highly annoying. The last thing I want is some kind of feud with the neighbors.

I'm also hesitant to contact the officials unless there was a way to do it anonymously.

My fear of causing tension means I haven't done anything... Sigh...

How god awful confusing it is trying to find the best deal on a new phone/coverage plan. It is almost as bad as trying to figure out how much a medical procedure will cost.

Maybe try an old southern recipe to quiet the barking?

Southern Hush Puppies

Cook a batch and toss a few over the fence...:)

I would walk down and talk to the neighbor with the barking dog. I think such things are best handled in person where you can be kind and polite but then they are warned. So many people are actually oblivious to these kind of things.

I'm sure this won't be a popular post.

This is why you read about neighbors shooting or poisoning their neighbor's dogs. It's actually understandable at some point, but they are considered cruel, criminals, and mean in the news in today's world. What:confused:

I grew up in a family in a residential area with two dogs, one a house dog and the other kept outside. So, no dog hater here. A few other neighbors also had dogs. None were allowed to bark as they knew each other. Heaven help a stray dog that came into the block. If that happened, low powered BB guns appeared from at least three neighbors and we never saw that dog again. All quiet, the neighbors brought bones over for Bootsie. She never gave them a mind when they came out in their yards. Neither did their dogs with us. The difference between a trained pet and a spoiled animal? Oh, and all of the families hung out clothes to dry and were super social. No dog problem was permitted by anyone. Air conditioning was rare, so windows opened at night were the norm. You couldn't even have an argument in the evening back then.

I have had lots of neighbors, some with dogs, but none were a problem except in the last couple of decades. Most folks kept dogs outside back in the day, but no issues. What is going on now?

If the neighbor doesn't care that much about their neighborhood, I wouldn't care much for their pet! But, we have become too sensitive now... Nobody's pet is worth your peace of mind.

Consider anti-barking sonic devices. I've read where the dog owners complained because their dogs would no longer go out to handle business.

etc....

Your post was popular with me. I concur en toto. The cult of the individual. It's usually couched as a property rights type issue. If it's in my yard who cares how other people are affected. I grew up similar to you except our house didn't have any dogs but the neighborhood had many. City row homes. People stacked up side-to-side. No dog problems.

That's about the worst thing. Maybe shrubbery or evergreens might help?

Yes, I understand about the barking dog being annoying, but I have a next door neighbour who barks at her dogs for not behaving in their backyard. That's as pretty annoying too.

I've never had a dog (plenty of cats), so I don't know, but if you fed it a piece of steak once, would it still bark at you after that?

You might be teaching it that it gets steak when it barks.

Dogs are a long standing pet peeve with me and I've said before that they have become surrogate aggressors for people with antisocial tendencies.

If you stood out in your yard and yelled threats at every passerby, they would take you away in a straitjacket. If you train your dog to do the same thing, you are a dog lover.

If you walked down the street and pooped in people's yards, you'd be arrested. Let your dog do the same thing and you are just a guy walking his dog.

If you jumped at people and threatened to injure them, the cops would be on you in minutes. Walk an aggressive dog down the street doing just that and you are a manly guy with a manly dog.

No real suggestions for the OP, but plenty of sympathy.

You guys are completely missing the point. The dogs aren't the problem. It's their owners. Shoot them with a "low powered BB gun".

Of course the problem is the owners. And once they have been targeted as irresponsible dog owners, directly or indirectly, they only become bigger azzholes.
