What We're Making

Here's a perfect step stool for you. A vintage step ladder made by Putnam Rolling Ladder Co - mainly used by the telephone company. I made one - it was a fun project. I don't know if there are any plans out there - I kinda eyeballed it. Have fun!

Thanks, it will be on near the top of my list once I get the power tools useable.

Cheers!

Playing around with leather - a pocketknife pocket slip - practicing to make some knife sheaths and other stuff.

Ronstar, You are a man for all seasons and produce excellent results with each. What haven't you dabbled in?

+1 I'm blown away at the woodworking skill level of so many here. I am trying to revive a 25yr old Craftsman table saw to play with. I also have an old router, circular saw, and drill of the same age. I hope to learn a few basic skills at 74 yrs to at least make a simple step stool. Most of what I have been doing is spending hours on You Tube. :D It appears I need to make a few accessories for the power tools first if I can get everything running.

Cheers!

Countless accessories. I'm starting to invest in some of the lesser used, but, so far, extremely accurate ones. This week was a first time using the cross cut miter sled with a dado blade. Did some 40+" dados and it seems to be dead accurate. Also a Rockler shelf pin jig, really like it over my" mini" Kreg one.

You can drop some bucks on this stuff, so make sure you really want it & have room for storing it (in my case).

Thanks - I don’t dabble in car restoration , electronics, boats, or anything that would be a waste of lots of money if I screwed it up.

Smart man, I have blown a lot of dollars on car restoration projects. It's kind of like having a mistress or two.

This started out in the BTD 2022 thread, just a continuing repurposing of an old desk given to us.
The old hole was too small or the new machine too big, take your pick.
The old machine was short enough that the support shelf could hang right above the drawer bottom.
Not this one, I had to plunge cut a big hole in the drawer.

I got the support structure built and installed. It's 0.125" low as shown. I have some luan skin to go zero or 0.25 ply to go a little high.
The bottom is some 15mm BB from the kitchen job, the sides are 12mm marine ply. It's glued and finish nailed together and hung to the desk with screws.

Cut the corner off for fishing in the cords

The drawer still functions as a pencil tray. I blocked it off with a little what-have-ya from the barrel of shorts. It opens no further due to the shelf.

I'll cut a cardboard pattern for the insert that goes around the arm of the machine.
The last insert was 1/4" overlay. This next one is some prefinished MDF core cabinet door insert.

WOW! That will beautiful when you are done. Let it dry then start sanding is the process, Ron?

I did look online for turquoise rock product and found more than I thought I would. I think I might get some and do a project with it. I really like the looks of the inlay you do.

Thanks - yes I’ll need to wait several days after epoxy before sanding. And the epoxy doesn’t really shine unless it’s sanded at a very high grit - maybe 800 or 1200. So there’s lots of sanding ahead.

Thanks, Ronstar. I hope you share your finished product when you are done. It will be a dandy!

I'm gonna do some of that in the future. I love turquoise and that crushed/pebble stuff is cheap. I've also used the clear 2 part epoxy before with good result.

Just...what to do with it? I'll just let it come to me while I sleep - :)

In my advancing years, I've come to realize the meaning of "just sleep on it"

I have this problem and I think I know the answer but I do nothing and the next day a far more elegant solution arrives in my head. Sometimes so much better I think "what was I thinking before?"

Yeah. Dream problem solving. Amazing - :)

Nice work Ronstar and Skyking... I'm working on 3 projects (yes, glutton for punishment).

Shaker doors with beadboard (for a kitchen) and sitting chest for under a window, both for clients & a bathroom linen closet for DW. Tough living in a tiny home...off to do some painting!

Amazing and beautiful wood projects Surewhitey.

Looking for some direction on building a snow sleigh for my two granddaughters. Well, just about two, one coming in the next 3 weeks or so.

I will do it with old cedar fence posts and take them down to a workable material. My question is the runners and the U shape I would need to design. I know you can heat wood, moisture and pressure to accomplish that art. Are there any other options for me besides using iron? I was thinking about purchasing a used pair of cross-country skis and use them as runners.

Thanks any suggestions will be very much appreciated.
Something like this.

Something like this.

I've done bent wood by cutting thin strips and wrapping & gluing them around a form jig. I believe they are 1/8", maybe less. Softer wood is probably easier to bend like that.

Skis sound like a good idea though.

Be careful with cedar... Lots of splinters are coming your way.

Jump in Robbie! Once you start making stuff with turquoise you won’t stop. You’ll end up making things for friend, relatives, neighbors, etc. I only have 2 things in our house with turquoise. All the rest went somewhere else. Once one relative got one, they all wanted one. I quit posting pics on fb and instagram. So don’t spread the word or post pics when you do something or you will end up being overrun with requests.

I’ve done the same thing as Surewhitey- gluing thin strips together and clamping to a form. And I’ve seen videos where people put the boards in a steam tube made of pvc that temporarily softens the wood so that it can be clamped to a form. Keep us posted! Looks like a great project!

Very interesting method with gluing strip around a jig. Thanks, you all for all your advice. I do go buy a used almost brand-new pair of cross-country skis after I posted this morning.

I have a set now just in case I decide to use skis for runners. It might be better and more durable than my gluing ability.
