What did you do today? - 2023/2024 version

Went to the hospital today, got a couple of x-rays done to try to determine what's causing me to have groin pain whenever I'm on my feet. Came back home and picked up DW and took her in for some lab work. When she came out the car wouldn't start. Definitely dead battery, for some reason. Luckily I have a major set of jumper cables. Unluckily, they were at home, in my garage. We waited an hour for AAA to come, but then a nice older lady gave us a jump. Canceled AAA, drove home, and put the trickle charger on the battery. Then went inside and ordered a power pack/battery charger from Amazon. This is the third or fourth time the battery in this car has died. I can't figure out why. I used to camp and play music on my old 2004 Highlander battery, and it started right up the next day. I suspect these newer cars have a lot of things pulling on the battery, even when it's turned off. Just my WAG.

If you have a DVM, check the battery voltage with and without the engine running.

If the alternator is doing its job, even at idle the battery voltage should be around 14V. More if it's cold. Less if it's hot.

I get to meet my household goods and furniture after 3 months in storage. This will be fun. I have the trash cans ready! As a single widower, I am turning "minimalist".

Have fun organizing your new home just the way you like it!

Finally finished painting the top of the cabinet project, it came out perfect. Upon thinking about it, that "glop" of paint necessitating the repaint may have been my fault. I suspect it may have happened because I started or stopped spraying while the spray was aimed at the top, or maybe at the edges. I really can't remember. This time I made sure not to do that.

We're having a discussion about what to do next with it color-wise. I'm leaning toward spraying a rectangle of black on the gray doors where they have an indentation to make them "pop" a little bit and DW says that will make it too "busy" looking. I did paint the drawer and door handles black (Rustoleum gloss) at her suggestion. The saga continues....

Went to the pharmacy and picked up a couple of prescriptions. I'm debating about whether to mow the grass or let it go for a few more days. It's still mostly dormant from the heat but we've had two inches of rain in the last four days so it's coming back.

Celebrated my 75th birthday and had to take my best buddy (cat) of 15 years to the vet to be put to sleep. He saw me through those years of many surgeries and slow recoveries to stay by my side and comfort me. He lost half his weight and was fighting kidney disease. I couldn't see him suffer anymore as he tried to fight back to health. It just wasn't going to happen. He was tired and his back legs were getting wobbly. I held him as he slowly went to sleep and finally stopped. It is going to take a long time to get over this.

Cheers!

I am so sorry to hear about your cat, Badger. Such a hard thing to do and on your birthday. He is no longer suffering and you have your good memories. Happy Birthday.

Sorry, Badger. i hate losing a beloved pet. I've done it too many times. I'm not over the last 3 times, one a couple months ago. All I can say is keep the good memories.

I'm so happy for you. Enjoy your new home.

Have fun getting your house in order! As to your trash cans, our garbage company will rent you another can for a while when you have a remodel our move or whatever causes a temporary increase in garbage. An extra can for a while would help if you go total minimalist.

But more importantly, place some food orders for delivery to make sure that local pizza places, etc can find your new place.

We had an appointment to get our babydog Nikki spayed & chipped. Dropped her off at 9:00 am and spent the day waiting for the call to pick her back up. Finally got the call at 5:40 pm that we could come get her. Got her home and she rested pretty good all evening.

Got a new ID card today (retired military). This is the second time I've had to do so since I retired, as they periodically upgrade to a new card with more security features.
Getting on a military base can be a challenge when the young troops on the gate have never seen one of the old style cards.

Today's version even has a color photo, which is a brand new feature!

Happy birthday!
However, condolences on the loss of your fur baby. That is so hard, but a loving thing to do after all the love they give back.

Today had follow up with Dr on my back. Slowly improving, got refill of Valium for another few days and PT referral to get started when able to move a bit better.
Currently, doing short walks, gentle yoga back stretches, along with heat/ice/massage.

Also, paid down payment for family Hawaii trip next summer!

What did you do today? - 2023 version

I was driving up the freeway when I saw a car stopped with hazard lights flashing, not on the shoulder, but still in the right lane.

That’s dangerous I thought. I hope no one is in the car. As I pass the car, I quickly looked in and saw a man on the phone.

There was a gap in traffic, so I decided to pull over to the shoulder and then reverse back up to the stopped car.

89-year-old. Leonard told me the car just cut out and I told him you need to get out of the car. It’s not safe. After a few minutes there was a gap in traffic and I was able to get him out and off to the side of the road where I moved my own car.

SMASH!

A 5000b pickup truck hit Leonard’s car at full speed and exploded it up the road out of sight.

Luckily the pickup driver was mostly ok. I don’t think Leonard would have survived the g forces.

So I did something helpful today for a change.

We are going out for celebration dinner tonight. This happened last week.

Wow, great job! I'm sure that does feel good.

It was a close one …

This morning headed to Moms house on a four-lane expressway. Green light at an intersection and I approached at 50 mph (speed limit 55). All of the sudden a pickup going the other direction runs his red light and turns left into the intersection in front of me. All I see is the side view of a pickup truck and small trailer across both lanes in my direction.

Didn’t hit, but was very close. Swerved around the trailer and braked hard to avoid a collision. In that split second was expecting my car to either spin or impact the truck, but fortunately neither happened.

Can report that the anti-lock brakes on my Subaru Outback work marvelously and kept me in control.

My guardian angel was watching over me today!

My grandson’s school had “invite someone special to lunch at school” today and he invited me. I brought sushi for both and we had an excellent lunch together. The day could not be any better.

Had an AM dr. appointment to get another needle injection in my back for the pain, this time on the left side. Made me a bit nervous for a few hours as I was partially numbed on my left leg, it felt a bit like partial paralysis, which of course makes one a tad nervous. I had to hang on to stuff to make it from the garage to the house without falling. But it went away in a few hours. (Where's the "big sigh of relief" emoticon?)

The cool thing is, for the first time in many years, I have no back pain! None! Zero! Yay!:dance::dance:
